People look at a few high IQ people with Aspergers or high functioning autism and think autistics are smart, but the reality is they are just exceptions to the rule. In the general western population, only 15% of the population scores 1 standard deviation or lower, than the 50th percentile which is set at an IQ of 100. On the other hand, over 55% of autistics belong to that IQ level even with greater inclusion of higher functioning autistics, although HFA is still slightly under-diagnosed.

According to 2014 US study, less than a third of the children with autism had intellectual disability, and 23% had IQ scores in the "borderline range" from 71 to 85.

This is around 56% which means only over 44% of autistics have an IQ of average or above, which 85% of the general population has. Above average intelligence also seems to be rarer, some sources put it at 5% or so, while the general population has around 15% of people.

Aspergers and PDD-NOS was merged into the Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnostic criteria in 2013, Aspergers no longer exists as a separate diagnostic criteria. The diagnosis of Aspergers used to require an average or above IQ while having autism, that is no longer relevent.

Yes, 85% of the population has an IQ above 85. 85-115 range is considered average, 70% of population fall under it.

Well of course, the majority of autistic people are low of middle functioning but HFAs aren’t even close to rare. IQ is a useless measure of general intelligence for autists because autists generally have a very uneven distribution of abilities (take for example an autistic classmate of mine, he’s a math and physics whiz but if he writes any sentence usually a third of the words will be misspelled)
