On Wednesday, May 11th, during lunch, a student was physically attacked and choked by another student Assaulter at his middle school. The school called victim’s parents and informed them that their son had been in an altercation with Assaulter. The school stated that the victim was at fault and received a 3-day ISS, while the aggressor Assaulter only received a 1-day ISS.
Victim's friends shared the video of the assault with parents and reached out to inform them that victim wasn't at fault. Victim's parents reached out to school authorities, shared the evidence and requested a reassessment. The school informed the parents that they have seen the video and that there will be no change in the course of action. The Coppell ISD SRO officer refused to file a citation because school administration asked it not be written, as there have been too many bullying complaints lately. The Coppell PD also dropped the ball. The parents tried in vain for over 2 hours to get a complaint filed against Assaulter, but were refused.
Victim's aggressor Assaulter in the video is on the wrestling team and can be seen carrying out a very dangerous carotid restraint on Victim's neck. This technique restricts blood flow to a person's brain by compressing the sides of the neck where the carotid arteries are located. Victim appears to briefly lose consciousness at the end of the neck choke maneuver.
CALL TO ACTION:
Due to lack of support from the Coppell ISD and Coppell PD to correctly handle this assault, we are demanding that the Assaulter be removed from my son's school immediately. Victim should never have to take a class, interact, or pass the hallways with this aggressor Assaulter ever again. Victim should be able to continue his school experience, friendships and extra-curricular activities with zero worry of ever having to cross paths with this aggressor again.
Our goal is to bring awareness to the bullying and assault problems in schools everywhere. All children deserve to be safe at school. Serious repercussions need to be in place for all violence against our children. This type of aggression needs to stop! [1]

Here is an update -
After the District received new evidence, additional disciplinary consequences were levied toward the other student. A complete bullying investigation was conducted beginning on May 19, 2022. The investigation determined that there was both physical and verbal aggression toward Shaan.
District offers an apology to Shaan for any and all miscommunication that has occurred during this matter.
District has levied additional disciplinary action against the other student involved.
Changes District has promised to make -
Parents request for the following remedies have all been granted by the District.
1. The District has zero tolerance for bullies - The District has policies and procedures outlined for bullying. The District is working on implementing additional staff training to address discipline techniques, bullying, and cyberbullying. Furthermore, Coppell ISD will conduct training and retraining for staff to ensure they have a full understanding of our safety and reporting protocols.
2. There are plans to provide student bystander training and action steps to ensure that all students understand their role in keeping one another accountable and safe within the school environment.
3. Specialized training will be conducted with the administrators involved specifically regarding District policies and procedures.
4. The No-Contact contract to be carried over to the 2022-2023 school year
5. The No-Contact contract to include no-retaliation language between 1) the other student and Shaan, and 2) no-retaliation by proxy language (for friends or families of either)
6. Teaching students about being a bystander to issues and incidents that may be bulling and/or harassment
7. Training for staff on bullying, cyberbullying, and school discipline policies/practices.
8. Training for students on bullying and cyberbullying
We are hoping we can move on and keep this in past as a lesson learned where the school district will not underestimate the matter of parents rights and students safety. [2]
