Bullying in school happened for over 10 years. Name calling and childish taunts progressed to physical assaults.
Pekka was the easy target, he looked and behaved differently and never fought back. The more the popular kids got away with it then more kids joined in and the whole situation escalated.
There was nothing 'wrong' in the way Pekka dressed. He was content knowing that he was clean and warm and looked somewhat smart. He made sure to set his alarm clock in the morning so that he would have time to shower and make sure his hair was styled correctly. He had no interest in the latest fashion trends, it didn't appeal to him to spend vast amounts of money on fad brand name trainers. But because he looked differently he was picked on.
Through teenage years when trends hyped up the latest pop-stars and Reality TV, Pekka was seen more and more as 'the odd one out'. He didn't enjoy or watch Big Brother so couldn't join in with the school-yard ravings about these new so-called 'celebrities'. .
As the kids grew so did the bullying...
The name calling escalated and the mental bullying turned physical. Pekka couldn't walk along the school corridor without being shoved into the wall. He was attacked and they threw him across the hall. A daily occurrence was for his bag to be snatched from him and the contents emptied all over the floor.
On his way home from school Pekka had to 'run the gauntlet'. Cans and stones were aimed at his bike wheels and his head. Laser pens were aimed at his eyes and he was even shot with a BB gun while riding his bike home.
The school did nothing. Pekka's parents contacted the school for help so many times that one of the taunts was "You better not sneeze of Pekka will report you to his Father". Bruises were ignored and instead of reprimanding the bullies Pekka was advised to "dress like everyone else" and his parents lectured about how Pekka should change so that he would "fit in at school and make it easy for himself".
Pekka enjoyed learning, he wanted to go to school and study, but the years and years of bullying started affecting his mental well-being. His daily mission became "Get to school in one piece. Get through the day as best he could. Get home in one piece."
He tried to counter-act some of the taunts. There was no way he could physically fight back again a group of kids and he knew that even if he did try then he'd likely come out a lot worse than if he just ran... But for the verbal taunts he tried joking along with them. He played the fool and laughed and joked with them. It didn't help and knowing just how Pekka was in himself this must have been incredibly difficult for him to try and do.
Pekka was prescribed SSRI medication. There is a long list of dates in the police report which details the many times that Pekka's parents sought help but for some odd reason this is heavily redacted and covered up. Pekka fought with the idea of taking medication. Why should he need this just to survive the school day? He didn't like how it 'zoned him out' and made him feel like a zombie.
The medication didn't seem to help much. His parents asked if Pekka could be referred to the adolescent psychiatric clinic to get therapy along with the medication. The doctor said 'no there's a 6 months waiting time and what Pekka had been diagnosed with was too mild for referal'. They advised to increase the doses of medication.
Pekka stopped going to the library because his bullies hung out near there. Instead his Mum collected his reading lists.
Pekka's attendance at school slipped. Pekka started to drop subjects, even dropping subjects he excelled in like German.
Pekka's parents didn't know about this until afterwards.... the school had some strange rule that because Pekka was 18 years old then they didn't have to inform the parents. Pekka's Dad did ask the school one time because he was concerned that Pekka should have been receiving Computer lessons. The school didn't inform him that Pekka had dropped the class.
In his last message Pekka said that "he hoped no one would have to carry out a school shooting like this ever again. he hoped the school system would change so that no one would have to go through and experience what he had endured".
