Let's say Harvard was based on pure test scores to get in. The people who get in will
1.Be from a good background where they can go to the best schools to study uninterrupted. The schools will know all the exam techniques etc to get the highest scores.
2.Be genetic geniuses with insane iq who can absorb and recite information incredibly fast. They will be able to understand abstract theories like it was just breathing.
So even if you put your best effort you would still lose if you're not from the right background or genetics. In fact working hard is genetics. Some people can withstand hours of working hard and never getting tired compared to others.
Meritocracy is just a fancy words use by the genetically and class privileged to justify having massive benefits over the rest.
