I really liked ME's unchartered world. I hated how Bioware got rid of them in the later games. People called them repetitive and bland, but I really appreciated the ambience and sense of exploration you got from them. It made space feel lonely and hostile. I actually liked the janky Mako physics.

I think the original Mass Effect handled space exploration far better than contemporary space sims like Starfield and No Man's Sky.

I loved them too, gave me a Star Trek feel

My headcanon for the repetitiveness is that the settlements used pre-fab habitats.

Me too. Even though it was repetitive and didn't have much variety I like it still.

I agree. It's ironic, isn't it? Those games are centered around exploration and yet Mass Effect 1's is more interesting despite it not being the focus.

I think it's partly because Mass Effect is a rich RPG while Starfield is a shallow sandbox game. Even with all its repetition and design constraints, I would take Mass Effect's story-driven exploration over Starfield's endless looting and base-building. ME's exploration feels more urgent, atmospheric and purposeful.
