The single player is mediocre due to completely lobotomized ai. Go play Mario Kart DD, DS, Wii, or even 7, and then play 8 on 100 percent and then 150 percent. 8 on 150 percent is easier than DS on 50 percent. The single player content is so easy that it's actively boring.
Since all of the characters are unlocked, there's no motivation to engage in single player content either, outside of unlocking gold mario.
Then we have online. The item system is completely unbalanced with 0 refresh times between powerful items like bullet bills. It's absolute madness to the point where there's 0 use in even playing well since you're more rewarded by playing kna mediocre manner untill lap 3.
I am a very avid Mario Kart fan. I put probably over a 100 hours in Wii, and 87 or so hours in 7. I've barely put twenty hours in 8 Deluxe. As much as people complain about World, 8 Deluxe was the begining of the end for the series.
Oh, also, I've made posts about this before, but the tracks are incredibly wide and it's impossible to completely fall off due to Lakitu so there's no punishment for poor driving. They even have an option where you can't fall off at all.
