Forced myself to finish Homunculus and that is pretty fucking shit. The idea of "guy gets a hole drilled in his skull and goes insane" sounds interesting, and it's jerked off as one of the "hard seinen best" next to PunPun and Berserk. Unfortunately, nothing happens. The only "hard" part of it is finding the motivation to continue.
Essentially he gets therapy-vision, and the hallucinations actually help him help others overcome their trauma. It's sorta implied he's just insane and getting lucky coincidences, but it's still already very gay and lame. Whatever idea you have for a story like that is infinitely more interesting than what actually happens: nothing. Nothing fucking happens.
He solves their problem after talking to them, and then goes fuuuuck helping people is le good? Then it repeats. Ending is: nothing happens, and he never learnt anything and in fact got worse bye bye.
Had some good art, but god is it fucking boring.

it focused on the characters rather than the battles. character driven stories tend to have the advantage everytime.
You should not force yourself to read series, it may not have been to your liking. But it's pretty good, i wouldnt say it's on par with Berserk, Punpun or Aku no hana. But it deserves some praise for a seinen.
Some honorable mentions to op: Ibitsu(the horny one), Boys on the Run, and Happy Massacre Ending.

I read it when it was still releasing (not the mediocre sequel) so my memory's fuzzy but just watching them chill and denji grow from their deaths to eat the hoe he simped for was kewl.

chainsaw man isn't meant to be taken that seriously. it's no AOT (everything past the ocean scene doesn't count) or claymore but it's fun.

I think their deaths were very helpful for denji's character but the author keeps backpedaling on that in the far inferior sequel
