He didn't actually kill the pig - probably stunned it. Typically animals are struck on the head to stun them, then are hung up and have their throats slit to bleed them out. My sledgehammer was given to me by my great uncle - he used to work at an abattoir and it was used to strike the cows on the head to stun them before slaughter.
