my uni is in partnership with YIVO (an institution which occupies itself mostly with documentation and promotion of Eastern European Jewish culture) and they offer free Yiddish courses for their students (my uni offers a bunch of language courses, I also attend German) and I've decided to sign up for it
maby I shouldn't start a new language when I'm already learning a few other ones at the same time but the dopamine I get from starting something new is too precious
I speak Polish naively, I know some Dutch, elementary German and I've been learning Hebrew for a year, so it should be a breeze since this language is a mixture of all of them
I can kinda decipher some easy texts with absolutely no formal learning, so it should be fun
I'm starting the classes next week, I don't have any details like what textbooks we will use and which variety we will learn (Yiddish isn't too standarized and apparently dialects vary quite a lot, but we'll probably be learning the YIVO-standardized language with the Polish/Slavic pronunciation)
I've discovered that our uni has a ton of pre-war Jewish writings (mostly letters) in its archives which no one bothers to translate since no one wants to learn Yiddish, even for free, so my long term plan is to eventually do some bullshit research concerning that and demand the uni to fund it cos muh Jews
