I already said something about the spelling bee a couple days ago but I wanted to rant a little. The spelling bee is a stupid contest. A contest to spell the ridiculous English language (hardest and stupidest language to spell in the world), they're spelling words nobody uses, and it’s not even fair since everyone gets different words, but for some reason America has always pushed this contest on kids.

Looking into it more, another weird thing is it's basically former top spelling bee kids who run the national spelling bee as adults and keep this torture going for future kids. For example the pronouncer in the video below was the 1980 national champion.

Plus learning to spell tens of thousands of words nobody uses doesn't have any use in life for these kids. They put thousands of hours into studying for spelling bees as children (a lot of them are curries, spelling bee is a huge thing with American curry parents). They could be putting those hours into anything else and it would be arguably better for their adulthood...actually learning to speak a foreign language, learning a musical instrument, learning math and science, learning finance, or relaxing and just being a KID enjoying themselves (better for MENTAL health). Of course, these kids will mostly grow up to be successful doctors, lawyers, etc. but they would've done that anyway without spelling bees simply because they're already smart and motivated.

If you've never seen the U.S. national spelling bee here is this year's TV finals (it started with 246 kids a couple days earlier):

Are you in France? France has something called dictée. AI says "A dictée is much harder than a spelling bee. A French dictée (dictation) requires you to write down an entire passage while it is read aloud. Unlike a spelling bee that tests memorization of single words, a dictée simultaneously tests your listening skills, vocabulary, and complex grammar rules, such as verb conjugations and gender agreements."

I like the idea of that more since you're actually being tested if you know how to use words in a sentence with correct grammar, and they probably aren't words nobody uses either like the national spelling bee. It's also fair since everyone gets the same words to write down.

Here's the 1989 France Dictée contest. I think they used to show it on TV:

Isn't dictée something every country does though?

I've only heard about the France one. Do you mean do other countries do French dictation contests? I don't know, maybe. There's not anything like that done in English in America.

The concept on one person reading a text so a group of people have to write it right. Are we really the only country that does that?
