The idea of country that we have today is from enlightenment and post-French Revolution influenced by romantic nationalism , no one had a concept of nation in the Middle Ages, what they had were kingdoms, duchies, fiefdoms, empires, people did not see themselves as a "national" in a country, at most a subject of the king or the church.
