Great book, deals with life of Muhammad & society of bedouin Arabia before islams, information in book are taken from contemporaries of Prophet Muhammad like Ibn Ishaq.

2) A History of Islamic Societies by Ira M. Lapidus

Its a really thick book & a long read, it's around 1000 pages and deals with everything from the great split of Shias & Sunnis to seige of Bakhdad, from pre islamic arabia to expansion of islam through caliphate. From Philosophy to core islamic thought & jurisprudence. If u want to read 1 book on islam than it has to be this.

3) Anthology of Islamic Literature by James

It's an compilation of select stories from 1001 nights , rubaiyats, masnavis, qasida & other sufi poetries. Great book, easy to understand writing & prose.
