It's often said that european colonization brought racism to the world, but native cultures themselves were colorist before the contact:
- Southern asian caste systems put darker people in the bottom and fair skinned at the top.
- Light skin is highly valued in China, Korea, Japan and also in southeast asia for centuries or perhaps millennia.
- Arabs already treated black people as slaves way before the Portuguese and other europeans.
- Generally speaking, native americans voluntarily allied to the Spanish and acknowledged them as their masters as soon as they first saw them.
- Even europeans themselves thought of pale skin as a higher-class trait, darker skin as low class. The tanned skin associated with rich who afforded to travel is only a recent phenomenon.
