Is the Metal Gear Solid franchise worth playing in 2026?

This is one of the big franchises I’ve never played but always hear good things about.

What game or franchise is this most similar to?

Most Resident Evil and Silent Hill fans love this franchise.

It interested me, but it also looks kinda boring, weird and confusing. I usually love fast paced zombie shooter games, so maybe this isn’t for me?

I wanna start with Metal Gear Solid Delta to get the juices flowing with the graphics and then slowly decline to the older games.

Mad respect for Hideo Kojima though. His work looks amazing. Might wanna try Death Stranding after and OD in the future

It's one of the most complicated franchises to get into. I'd say that if you're particularly interested in the story, well, you have no choice but to play them all. But if you're more interested in the gameplay, many of them haven't aged well. I'd say that of the "retro" ones, only Snake Eater is fun. The fourth installment has too many cutscenes that can be off-putting, but the fifth one is a very interesting open world. I don't know if Metal Gear Rising also counts; as far as I know, it's canon, but die-hard fans detest it. However, you should know this: Metal Gear Risin: Revengeance is considered one of the pinnacles of the hack-and-slash genre, second only to Devil May Cry 5.

All of them are pretty good. Peace Walker can be a bit slow though. 3/Delta is very good.

V and Rising have the best gameplay in the series arguably but I still enjoyed the others.

It's a game that Kojima Productions will eventually make. Seems like a horror game, Jordan Peele is co-developing. I think Stellan Skarsgard is in it too?

Just play V. If you like it you’ll love the entire series.

you play it for the story depth and 4th wall breaking. the gameplay is simple stealth but fun as it makes sense.
I would highly recommend to play them in chronological order as they constantly have twists. if you only have time to play one pick from 1-3. the rest was made for fanservice as kojima gave up after 3.
