The single player is easy enough so kids can beat it just by brute force like leveling up their starter so much and giving it high damage moves. But competitive is surprisingly complex as you have to know a lot about Pokemon stats, abilities, status moves, nature, counters, etc. Also spend lots of time grinding to get the perfect competitive Pokemon with the optimal EVs and IVs or whatever they're called.
I sometimes watch videos about competitive Pokemon even if I'm not interested and always surprises me. Also doubt any normie has time for that so I guess tournaments are like Yugioh or Magic tournaments full of incels.
