I think this might be because most people just don't care, so when someone is like that people thank them. People thank me for weird stuff sometimes, one time a guy thanked me for wiping my feet before entering the building.

Yes, I also try to change this behavior.
Like I always say hello to cashiers or coworkers, even though most of them don't respond.

I grew up under people who never apologized when they were wrong but always expected an apology even if I did nothing wrong. It's probably in part why I'm such a meek pussy.
