Supposedly, "volunteering" to help or serve others can supposedly benefit people suffering from loneliness and depression.
Here's a summary from Google search, under the question "How does volunteering help with depression?"
"Volunteering reduces stress and increases positive, relaxed feelings by releasing dopamine. By spending time in service to others, volunteers report feeling a sense of meaning and appreciation, both given and received, which can have a stress-reducing effect."
So essentially volunteering is just a way to distract oneself from their depression. By helping others you momentarily "feel" a sense of meaning and appreciation and forget about your depression. The source of your problems remains unaddressed, but hey, you feel happy things for a while. Your life is trash and you aren't receiving any help, but if you want to feel better go help some random strangers. If the whole point of volunteering is to reduce stress then why not just drink alcohol?
This such an idiotic piece of advice I don't even know where to begin.
Someone suffering from true depression is usually so broken they barely have the energy to do daily basic chores for themselves. So how the hell are they supposed to go out there help complete strangers?
I swear, people who write such garbage advice have no idea what they're even talking about. Or they are just conflating depression with boredom.
