The governments have the technology to know if an asteroid is getting close to Earth, or if X country is gonna nuke X one, or if a massive earthquake is gonna happen in some place in the world, however if the say anything there would be chaos. People would get crazy, society would collapse, coups d'etat everywhere, etc. So they rather keep silent and try to fix it and if they fail, we're all fucked but we wouldn't know till the very end.
There could be a massive alien invasion scheduled by the next year and no government would say shit.
