Ever had a parent or teacher that did everything it wanted, but faced no consequences? What about politicians or law enforcement? Doctors?

A mismatch of power and responsibility occurs when entities (singular or collective) hold authority and exert their power/influence without being held accountable, or in reverse, when entities are assigned to certain tasks and obligations, but with no authority or power. The latter implies lack of power and the inability to repudiate the responsibility.

I've noticed an embryonic but disturbing trend, where sub5 males are assigned more responsibilities than the ones they're able to handle, and the power, status and money they get in return is clearly not reflective of those responsibilities. I present three examples from my life:

1. The class president switcheroo

In elementary and middle school, the class president is not expected to do anything other than to look good. It entails almost no responsibility, and is only meant as a form of PR-lite.

Being sub5, I was never elected for class president. It was always the popular attractive kids (they didn't need to be tall necessarily) that got elected. This was actually one of the rejections/ostracizations that hurt less, because it was a theatric endeavor, and not my cup of tea. But the next thing that happened, in 12th grade, is fucking bullshit:
I have something to add here. Yes I've seen the dynamic play out in those early grades, but on 12th grade something happened to me that was really weird.

Those fuckers named me as class president. I didn't even come forward as a candidate so initially I refused, but the lead teacher at the time refused my refusal.

The thing is, there's no way they did this to me because I was popular and well liked. I wasn't horribly bullied in high school, compared middle school, but that doesn't mean I was popular either. The girls there made it pretty clear that they found me disgusting. Among the guys, they considered me some joke or mascot.

So what the fuck was their problem and why did they appoint me for president? I might actually make a separate thread about this, because I've had this shit happen two more times after: appointed as team leader at work, appointed as building find manager.

But I took revenge on those sons of bitches, and I look back at this small victory with a smile. My revenge was doing nothing. What were they gonna do, kick me out? Things became awkward because of drama where some of the students insulted/harassed the teachers, and the teachers fucked them over with disciplinary action. By following the teachings of St. Luigi (Luigi wins by doing nothing) I got to fight another day.

2. The team leader switcheroo

At one of the companies I worked, there were too many engineers, so they had to start organizing them by teams, and hierarchies inside those teams. Team leader positions were often suited for people with "good social and soft skills" (read: NT) and "capacity for leadership" (read: being attractive and/or tall). To be fair, seniority did play a small role, but not all seniors made it necessarily to this position. Note that there can be multiple team leaders, which is relevant for the end of this section.

But things eroded. Salaries stagnated, raises were shit or nonexistent, almost no training or workshops. During salary raise meetings, I would express that I expected much better compensation, because my KPIs were high. They mentioned that, in addition to continuing my improvement of hard skills, I would have to start improving my soft skills too, as they were lacking
(a few years later I found out it was all bullshit anyway, and that non-Chad NTs were told the same thing. Company wanted to suppress salaries and raises to keep the shareholders happy)
Now, in a way, it's true, I'm way more technically oriented. I just want to get my job done and go home, no patience for small talk. If the implication is that I'm ND, that is a suspicion I had already. In order to get a pay raise, I would have to work on these soft-skills, and then apply for positions higher in the hierarchy, such as Team Leader.

I didn't give two shits about what they said, and kept doing what I did best. But later that year, I get pulled into a meeting discussing the possibility of me becoming a team leader.
The Office What GIF

The contradiction should be obvious, but the worst part is how they wanted to handle this transition, in case I accepted it.

They had targeted non-Chad NTs before, and I heard rumors that the position would be updated without immediate salary adjustment :feelsclown: You had to wait for the retroactives for a period time that was not made clear by the board. Obviously I say I'm not interested, and the meeting ends.

But next year, those fuckers force me into the Team Leader leader, regardless of my "soft-skills". The official story is that the current one was on holidays or sick leave, I don't remember which, so I had to fill in for him. This time it was harder to pull off a "Luigi wins by doing nothing", because they were on my ass the whole time.

When the other team leader came back, I WAS STILL A TEAM LEADER, those added responsibilities weren't lifted! I did get the retroactives... like, 2 fucking months after the announced date. I left the company shortly after in disgust, for this and other unrelated things.

3. The building fund manager switcheroo

Was appointed to this bullshit this year despite being "that weird guy who's always quiet and never around". It's worsened my nerves and sleep apnea, and I noticed that I'm gaining weight again despite exercising. Not obese, but in the cusp of becoming non-obese overweight. I've been insulted by the previous administration with remarks such as "if it was us, X problem would be solved already". I am earning a total of 🄁 0 euro and 0 cents for doing this job, apparently it rotates between flatowners every 2 years.

But I'm a very recent flatowner. I didn't even know where the storage room for the cleaning materials was. Is it a good idea to appoint me to this kind of position? Is this some kind of joke? I now have two jobs that I hate - this and a full-time IT job.

This time there is no St. Luigi to save me. Things break all the time in this building, I have to write receipts for payments, contact suppliers; I'm afriad the other homeowners might sue me for negligence or some other BS.

Conclusion

I'm paranoid about shit like this happening again, and it will cause me to further isolate from the rest of society. #1 is not that bad, because I will never be in a situation where I'm forced to be class president, e.g. if I'm just a student at an uni. #2. Is basically something I have to keep rejecting until I'm forced into doing it, in which case I need an exit strategy. #3. Can be avoided by buying a house/villa instead of a flat, although this is easier said than done with these obscene property and urban terrain prices. I might never be able to own one of these, but a guy can dream.

I wonder what the massification of AI will do alongside this trend, in particular for #2. Company directors will probably find the most painful and agonizing ways to pipeline their workers at the backdrop of LLMs. Maybe instead of coding a module for some payment platform, I'll have to start doing management stuff like meetings and gay ass powerpoint presentations, or even worse, sales stuff. When that happens I'm leaving this fucking industry for good.

Being leader is a scam :feelsdevil:
