Nowadays you need to go through months of procedures just to work at a fast food
I work in fast food, and that's the case where I work. You apply, wait, get a call where your first interview is scheduled, go to that interview, wait, get another call scheduling a second interview, do that interview, and you'll get a call after that if you're actually hired....and we don't ultimately hire the vast majority of the people who apply. But if you're one of the lucky ones, from start to finish you're looking at about 2 months.
And this is pretty much standard procedure everywhere. I remember the first fast food job I got way back in the mid 2000s. I just showed up looking ghetto as fuck, filled out an application, was interviewed on the spot, and given the job. But those days are long gone. The 2008 recession changed all that. The labor participation rate never fully recovered from that. but that's another topic.
Oh, and where I work, we don't even hire people starting full time anymore. All new employees start part time and are told if their performance is good they'll have the opportunity to go full time in 6 months to a year. I'm considered one of the lucky ones since I get 40 hours a week.
But the difficulty of getting even a basic job these days, and the length of time it takes to get one, makes even moving to another city (within your own country) extremely difficult. You can't just pack your shit, drive over to another city, and expect to find a job within a couple weeks. With some fields you can do a zoom interview, possibly get hired, then move over. But for low skill labor (fast food, warehouse, etc.) you're expected to interview in person, so that's not an option. That means if you move to another city and need to get a job
after moving there, you'll need to save up enough to survive for at least 6 months...because that's how long it takes to get a job these days.
