Many people believe that humanity has made incredible progress over the centuries. We have advanced technology, modern medicine, instant communication, and access to almost unlimited information. Despite these achievements, I believe that modern society is one of the worst societies that has ever existed—not because we lack comfort, but because we have lost many of the qualities that make life meaningful.
One of the biggest problems is the rise of social media and constant digital stimulation. People compare themselves to carefully edited versions of others, leading to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Instead of building genuine friendships, many people chase likes, followers, and online validation. Technology was created to connect us, yet many individuals feel lonelier than ever.
Another issue is the growing culture of consumerism. Society encourages people to measure success by money, expensive possessions, and social status. Many work long hours not because they love what they do, but because they feel pressured to keep up with others. As a result, happiness is often replaced by endless competition and dissatisfaction.
Modern society is also becoming increasingly divided. Political disagreements, ideological conflicts, and online arguments have made it difficult for people to respect different opinions. Instead of discussing ideas calmly, many immediately insult or dismiss those who disagree. This creates hostility rather than understanding.
In addition, mental health problems appear to be affecting more people than ever before. While increased awareness means more people seek help, many also experience chronic stress, burnout, and feelings of isolation. Fast-paced lifestyles leave little time for reflection, meaningful relationships, or personal growth.
However, it is important to recognize that previous societies had severe problems as well. Wars, famine, widespread disease, discrimination, and poverty were often far worse than they are today. Many people in the past had shorter lives and fewer freedoms. Therefore, it cannot be stated as an objective fact that modern society is the worst in history.
Even so, I believe modern society faces a unique crisis. We have solved many physical problems, yet we continue to struggle with psychological and social ones. Despite living in the most technologically advanced era, many people feel disconnected, overwhelmed, and dissatisfied. In my opinion, this makes today's society deeply flawed and one of the most challenging environments in which to find genuine happiness.
