If you take "progress" for granted you cannot call yourself open minded and critical, the only thing which is progressive is the cumulation of technical knowledge which improves technology, if no knowledge is lost than that is true and valued as progress, but there is no real guarantee that there has been a true greater philisophical knowledge aquired by the general popolation, since human life keeps being somewhat of the same length, the actual increase on philosophical knowledge is very limited since for you to know it truly you have to question everything step by step with your mind, ending up not being able to cover everything that was thought while at the same time producing new ideas. So thinking that cumulated knowledge will bring society to a utopia is a huge delusion the only thing cumulated knowledge can truly do for certainity is bring higher technology who could also end up making the world worse. Just think of how classical metaphysics is refused today despite it holding very strong validity and logical proofs only because the veil of maya exist or because pragmatism isn't a mathematical axiome, ending up to the victory of baseless ideas like moral relativism, think of how natural philosophy is called "science" giving birth to scientism in which instead of recognizing the galileian method for the tool it is, people dickride every pseudoscientific conclusion that "scientific" authority makes (people that try to fabricate proofs to show that a male can have a "female" brain in order to justify transexuality) or think about how technocracy is seen as natural despite it having no strong logical proofs for being so, neither having performed well in any mass society experiment, think of the presumption held by modern people claiming the soul doesn't exist only because the mind depends on the brain etc... if you hold these views note that they're not "scientific" or "advanced", they are gnostic, this has led to people believing in unproven theories such as macroevolution or the idea that humanity will become like god etc...

Litterally everything wrong with society stems from the average population being retarded. A Utopia can not exist, someone has to be a fool and do the bidding of the true winners. Only those winners experience Utopia. China as an empire has been stagnant for very long time, what technological progress is needed for is to avoid darwinistic selection on yourself just like the unorganized primitive irish were smashed by the organized anglos, but this kind of "progress" is just a tool that comes out from cumulated tech not some kind of destiny
