I don't think there is a message, also literally every anime has the whole "fate" plot line (that's why it's over played). It's one of the reasons I liked berserk, because Guts existence defies fate in that series, he was going against destiny. He wasn't supposed to survive, his very existence is an abnormality.

He allowed the plot to screw him over, he could have left and went to any place in the world. With his stand powers he could have made millions for himself doing something (being a hitman, IDK). He didn't choose the path of least resistance and "peace" like he claimed he wanted. He was a walking contradiction, talking about wanting peace and quiet, but being a serial killer and risking jail time.
