The only answer I can come up with is that he was intelligent but lacked wisdom. A lot of bright young men commit stupid mistakes because they don't know better. It's only through experience that they get to see the full picture. Unfortunately for Elliot when he got to see the full picture it was far too late. He also had delusions of grandeur which made it harder for him to admit he wasn't able to compete with other men due to his subpar looks; had Elliot realized this fact earlier, he could have saved up some money and travelled to another region where competition is lower and most likely ascended with someone his category.
