One of the traits the left is beating out the right in is being mentally ill, or at least unstable. Normal, stable & generally happy rightwingers don't care about politics, they only want to be left alone to start a family and live their lifes.
Abnormal freaks with a huge hunger for status, a deep-rooted insecurity about their place in the hierachy and a strong ideological tilt make it their life's mission to affect some societal change in the direction they judge desirable. One of the reasons the right loses is because they attract the type of down-to-earth individualists who make terrible foot soldiers in an ideological conflict.
To rule you need to be capable, which mostly means smart, and have the right personality, meaning a will to power, an unquenchable need to remake the world in your image.
The far left has both. High IQ and high amounts of insanity. And complete certainity in the righteousness of their cause. They know the mandate of heaven to be on their side.
On an individual level, it can make sense to focus on the own life and ignore politics, maybe it even does so for most of us. But, in the long run, real change will require political meassures and not playing is the same as losing. If you don't care to make the rules, someone else will be happy to, and they won't hesitate to take everything they can from you.
