When establishing and centralising a nation, there’s always a period where you steal power from competing elites usually by overtaxing them or just assassinating them. Examples:
Tokugawa forcing daimyo to live in Edo and kicking out foreigners (while maintaining Western knowledge transfer because high IQ)
Ivan the Terrible raping nobles
Mohammed Ali murdering Egyptian mamluks
British tyranny and slaughtering the Irish
But if you try to do that shit nowadays it’s muh politically incorrect and US invades you. Brutal. But ofc there’s still ways to go about this
With Rwanda, Paul Kagame at least has the Rwanda Genocide as a permanent guilt trip card to do whatever he wants.
While Israel has billion dollar lobbies and muh Shoah muh terrorism to permit it’s war crimes
Or you have countries like Iran, NK and Eritrea that tolerate political isolation in return for independence. Although North Korea seems to be a cucked nightmare and Eritrea is still a shithole.
But tbh maybe it’s because I’m a cuck with no self respect whereas many people would sacrifice quality of (or their) life for their sovereignty. Rather than begging the West to take them in or ‘save them’ from oppression/tribulation. And economies are built by toiling hard in awful conditions. While people like me flee harsh conditions instead of enduring or fighting them.
Anyway back to original topic, probably the most infamous example of a dictator who overextended is Gaddafi IMO. He kept challenging hegemons with ‘muh Arab solidarity’ and pan-Africanism supporting basically every foreign anti-establishment movement instead of laying low and building up his country. Now Libya has collapsed back into Berber fiefs
