The West is very artisanal. You need to spend your adolescence developing strong social and functional skills in order to succeed in life. You can’t earn respect by just sitting around or trying to do things and failing at them.
Ofc this is common sense to a Western person but a lot of us ethnics have parents who came from egalitarian cultures where everyone did the same shit or had the same skill level. All you had to do was obey your parents and fall in line. Skills developed naturally
Perhaps they came from cultures that only valued work ethic (just studycel all day) or where children are just meant to work at the family business then ‘inherit’ it somehow. Or nomadic culture with inconsistent scheduling and little ‘work ethic’ (even if it’s a harsh lifestyle) by Western standards
This obviously creates a clash between inherited culture enforced within the parental household and the Western society which you must succeed in more than anything. So you either end up rebelling or submitting yet failing and dishonouring the family
