How do people float in the oceans without swim gear, ?

i remember as a kid at seaside if i just relaxed all my muscles and let the flow carry me i would be able straight up drift on the surface of water without even swimming. But i was just a skinny kidcel and didn't stray too far from the beach. Maybe that would be impossible in the middle of the sea because of undercurrents and slightly different chemical composition of water

You can just lay on your back and float

As long as you aren't overly obese and especially if the water is salty you can easily just float while relaxed.
The issue with swimming isn't even stamina, it is temperature. If the water is pleasant then you can go on for hours. I get that said foid also got to grab onto a piece of driftwood, which made it easier for her.
