If the genders were equals, I wouldn't have to hold up to a standard of masculinity and compete with other men (Because that's what men do, compete. It always was). It's literally something ephemeral and infinitely far away, which can cover up anything. Khrushchev promised to build communism by 1980, and Brezhnev promised to build communism by 2000, as a result, the USSR sank into oblivion and disappeared like state, and instead of communism, the most brutal Victorian style took its place.

But I'd assume that from the cold war the Soviet Party became too aligned with nationalism (under Stalin rule) and eventually couldn't keep up with the influential power of capitalism and basically gave in to external agents. Again, I'm not an active communist and I don't know much about communist theory, but I have seen enough evidence about the faults of corruption/lobbyism/corporate interests and class collaborationism to know that socialism is the way.
Capitalists always try to discredit communism but I don't see them dealing with the problems capitalism has because they can't. And they want to keep it that way so the best way they can do it is by advocating for liberal (and in extreme circumstances, reactionary) politics all while blaming socialism for all the evils and shit in the world.

Communism/leftist views on society building and communism/leftism are two different things in practice. Communists and leftists have always given preference to women and always will, because by controlling women, you can control the entire society, since women, having power over their sons, can brainwash them with their political views, as well as influence their husbands to also act as a propaganda relay towards them. When the USSR occupied the countries of Eastern Europe and received local resistance, it gave privileges to women and used them as much as possible as a loyal element for local Eastern European communist political parties.
Again, that's one of the problems I have with the left in general. But that privilege for women can be seen in both leftist and right-wing. The difference is that a core tenent for right-wing societies is to set low standards for women and give them the status of being a prize or a trophy for the powerful men. Or breeding tools or whatever, but in the most right-wing society the greatest/richest/most successful man in war would be the one to have the most children.
It is logical that the opposite can be seen on left-wing societies. But like I said, we haven't had that yet. The world hasn't progressed much and we're only just starting to see the gears work to pave the way for that.

Not even ordinary people fled the USSR, but military pilots, read the story of Viktor Belenko, who hijacked the latest Soviet military fighter jet in order to escape to Japan and from there ask for political asylum in the United States. He was a military pilot, an officer with the rank of senior lieutenant ( the equivalent is a first lieutenant in the US Army). Could an American officer hijack the newest US aircraft during the Cold War and fly it to the USSR? I don't think so.

Secondly, consider society before and after the Sexual Revolution, and what "gender equality" has brought us. Before then, incels like ourselves had to be exceptionally deformed like the Elephant Man to not find a partner or wife. Women were unable to select and we held the upper hand economically and culturally.
Compare to what we have now - the Internet made women worldwide have their standards explode far beyond what sometimes can even be reasonable in addition to affirmative action in workplaces keeping men out of jobs and having the wage gap not close, but exceed that of men in certain cases and aspects. More young men are unemployed than young women because of this bias.
Similarly, the societal decay and cultural rot we have is ANOTHER result of gender equality and the Sexual Revolution of the 60s and 70s. Traditional family structures were viewed as evil because some tribal niggers in Polynesia were fine with their women riding the cock carousel until they settled down.
