After the Communist victory in 1949, hundreds of thousands of soldiers were sent to no man’s land in Xinjiang to create farms for the state, a strategy to take control over the Muslims dominated region. But there was a problem. There were no women for these men. The solution was the unprecedented CCP sponsored human trafficking. The army recruited young women in Hunan province by promising them glorious work of running army’s modern farms and the opportunities to study in Russia. Tests and screening were required. 8000 “lucky” ones, many educated, were selected. They had no idea what awaited for them. All of them were “auctioned” out as wives upon arrival. Officers with the highest rank got to pick first. The young women were told that this was their revolutionary duty. Many married men old enough to be their fathers. Many never got to see their families again. Their stories remain unknown until recent times.
