The words echo across the Triangle Square parking garage in Costa Mesa, California, directed at a woman in a chic white pantsuit, early forties, cheeks red and makeup a little smudged. The man who said them follows her as she strides away.

“Can I hook up with you?” he says.

“Fuck off,” she mutters, picking up her pace. She clocks that he’s recording her from his sunglasses, which have a built-in camera.

“What kind of vagina do you have?” he persists. “Is it an innie or an outie? Does it have beef curtains?”

She threatens to call the police, but as he pursues, his taunts grow more obscene. She speeds up and seems to get away before the video abruptly cuts.

“My fat-ass cock is ready to get hard for you,” Young says to the women, sitting on a bench outside a nightclub that’s part of the same mall complex as the garage, awaiting their rideshare pickup. One of the women says the cops are on their way, trying to scare him off.

“Fuck you, you little bitch,” he says. Her friend kicks at him, stands, and tells him repeatedly to back up. He does, still recording, and tells her to chill out. She lobs a sandal at him. He pulls out a canister of pepper spray and deploys it in her face. A woman in a green dress intervenes, and he sprays her too.

Young uploads the videos online, where men who have never met him cheer his cruelty and christen him a hero. Now he has a following. And as his attacks become more violent and brazen, he goes viral within a segment of the Internet that has an insatiable, sadistic thirst for shock and misogyny: the incels.

It’s tempting to dismiss someone like Young, who is now twenty-eight, as a mentally ill outlier. A castoff from mainstream society. But the disgusting harassment of women that he perpetrated and captured on video is more than one man’s depravity. Rather, it offers a window into a growing movement that thrives on misogyny, anger, and humiliation.

They practice aggressive self-loathing, describing themselves as deformed or mentally ill, but show little interest in changing. They post frequently about suicide or exacting revenge for their romantic failures. They’re mentally unhealthy: According to a landmark study by the Commission for Countering Extremism in the UK, 39 percent of incels have depression and 43 percent have anxiety. Incels also score high on psychological measures of interpersonal victimhood, marked by rumination, the tendency to dwell on moments when they believe they were wronged.

If an incel tries to work out (“gymmaxxing”) or better themselves, the community treats them with contempt. Any effort at improvement is derided. Working a job is called “wageslaving.” If incels think a man attracts women only because he has a high-paying job, they call it “betabuxxing,” marking the man as an inferior “beta” male.

The core incel community moved to Reddit, first on the subreddit r/incels. After it was banned for violent content, they moved to r/braincels, which was also banned. As it became more difficult to stay on mainstream platforms, they shifted to 4chan and their own website, incels.is.

On an afternoon in August 2025, nine threads are pinned to the top of the incels.is discussion board. One discusses why sex is the only thing that matters in life. Another reads that it’s unfair that women make millions of dollars on OnlyFans while men work blue-collar jobs. Another still is titled “The worst part about being an incel is not having a girlfriend to beat up.”

“Imagine how nice it must be to get home from a long hard day of work and be able to just knock one of your girlfriend’s teeth out and give her two black eyes,” writes the original poster. “I’d love to parade her around in public after too so everyone can see how I abuse her.”

“It would be nice to have a girlfriend to beat up and she still loves you after,” someone replies.

“That would be the life. Beat a hole as much you like, and your dick is down her throat a minute later,” says a third.

“And she’ll thank you for it.”

Members regularly share elaborate rape, murder, and suicide fantasies. In one missive, a user graphically details a fabricated encounter with an imaginary female roommate. In their kitchen, he beats her to the brink of death, anally rapes her, and smears excrement in her mouth before slitting her throat and hanging her body from the ceiling. When her boyfriend comes looking for her, he stabs him to death too. The post ends as he’s shot and killed by police.

“This is far more based than I expected,” reads a reply. “This is what every whore in this world fucking deserves.”

Women are referred to as “foids” (a portmanteau of “female humanoids”), “toilets,” “cum dumpsters,” and “roasties,” which refers to the belief that a woman’s genitalia must look like roast beef once she has had sex with a lot of men. Sometimes they attach a racist prefix to “-whore.” They use similar words to describe themselves, attaching prefixes to “-cel” for incel. They use online slang like “based” to express ideological admiration and Matrix-inspired “red pill” and “blue pill” lingo to describe worldviews.

After the 2022 shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, which killed nineteen students and two teachers and injured seventeen more people, the incels rejoiced.

“Based shooter. The only thing I lament is that he couldn’t kill more,” wrote one.

“Good riddance, all the future drug users and single moms sex havers coom dumpster have been deleted from the face of the earth . . .” wrote another.

First they must believe violence is an answer. Around 25 percent of incels believe that violence is justified against people they perceive as harming them, and 5 percent said it was “often” justified, based on the Commission for Countering Extremism study. This most extreme 5 percent not only held more misogynistic views but also had poorer mental health.
