Tbh, the hardest thing about older games like this is the punishing lives system where you're sent back to the beginning of the game. If you want a more forgiving but still difficult classic game you should play Castlevania 4.

Congrats! I grew up when these games were new, they were SO brutal back then. I didn't have the patience for them (but I think I could beat Super Mario Brothers in about 10 minutes). I would rent a game for a few days and cheat my way to the end with a device called the Game Genie. I just wanted to see the whole game, didn't care about beating it fairly.
