h1z1 and before that free dayz mod....its always some random mod creator who creates some great idea, releases it free then the big companies polish it and make billions off it

I think Call of Duty was also based off some free mod from Quake or Half Life

Battlefield 1942 hired some of the mod guys to help with Battlefield 2
