Heathens did believe they went to hell when they died anyway. Unless they died in battle and were chosen to be trained in Valhalla for Ragnarok as one of the einherjar. You had to die in battle and be based though I don't think getting shot in the back of the head with an arrow while you were running away counts. The Norse had a goddess of the dead who was in charge of hell who was half beautiful woman and half rotting corpse.
