By Dragon Ball I assume you include the Dragon Ball series that preceded Dragon Ball Z, because I think you can watch Dragon Ball Z on its own and Dragon Ball is really not necessary.

I watched Dragon Ball Z Kai because it is a shorter and in my opinion better expression of Dragon Ball Z, but in my opinion the series should have ended with Gohan defeating cell.
