Call me naive, but I believe he can defend himself without physical altercation. He has to develop wit and verbal responsiveness. Starting with shouting "fuck off' to people the second they laugh at him or call him freak.

I know it's easier said than done, but this is what he should aim at, and be encouraged to aim at.
