The materia system is just plain garbage. It is even more fiddly and ridiculous than junctioning is. In FFVI, once a character learns magic with their linked summon, they get to keep it forever. One of the reasons that makes that game so awesome.
And for that matter FFV is better than VII too, so many jobs and abilities to mix and match. Equipment is optimized automatically once you choose a class too.
VII is when FF stopped being intuitive. People love it because of the characters and music (which are admittedly the best in the series), but they overlook all the bad points.
