In communism, there is no money, or state (government). A good example of communism would be most ancient hunter-gatherer tribes, or pre-colonial natives living in what is modern day US and Canada.

Soviets and China never came close to communism, they still had governments (obviously) and currency. They were at most "communist states", which is basically another term for socialism. Basically standard capitalism but with a strong welfare state and government control over the economy, business, and finances. This is what most people think "communism" is, even though ironically government and money doesn't exist in communism.
