Every salt and sugar brand in India has microplastics: Study - Times of India

As per a latest PTI report, all Indian salt and sugar brands, whether big or small, packaged or unpackaged, contain microplastics. The study, “Microplastics in Salt and Sugar” and conducted by the environmental research organisation Toxics Link, tested 10 types of salt — including table salt, rock salt, sea salt and local raw salt — and five types of sugar purchased from both online and local markets
In the study it is revealed that microplastics are present in all salt and sugar samples, in various forms including fibre, pellets, films and fragments. The size of these microplastics ranged from 0.1 mm to 5 mm.
The highest levels of microplastics were found in iodised salt, in the form of multi-coloured thin fibre and films.
The PTI report quotes Toxics Link founder-director Ravi Agarwal , which says, "The objective of our study was to contribute to the existing scientific database on microplastics so that the global plastic treaty can address this issue in a concrete and focused manner.”
The study findings are concerning and calls for urgent, comprehensive research into the long-term health impacts of microplastics on human health. The concentration of microplastics in the salt samples ranged from 6.71 to 89.15 pieces per kilogramme of dry weight, the report said.
Iodised salt had the highest concentration of microplastics (89.15 pieces per kilogramme) while organic rock salt had the lowest (6.70 pieces per kilogramme), according to the study.
As per the report, the concentration of microplastics ranged from 11.85 to 68.25 pieces per kilogramme, with the highest concentration found in non-organic sugar.
For the unversed, sugar provides a quick source of energy, essential for fueling physical activities and brain function. It also enhances the flavor of foods, making them more enjoyable. Salt, on the other hand, helps maintain the body's fluid balance, supports nerve function, and plays a crucial role in muscle contractions. Additionally, salt enhances the taste of food, making it more flavorful and satisfying.
Take a look at the side effects of consuming microplastics
Toxicity: Microplastics can contain harmful chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, and heavy metals. These substances may leach into the body, leading to hormonal disruptions, reproductive issues, and other health problems.
Inflammatory Response: Microplastics can cause inflammation and oxidative stress in tissues, potentially leading to long-term damage, including cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
Gut Microbiome Disruption: Ingested microplastics may alter the gut microbiome, affecting digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function.
Bioaccumulation: Microplastics can accumulate in organs over time, potentially leading to chronic health issues.
