With those subverted expectations out of the way
, it's actually hard to understand why this is, since this paper has like three or four completely counterintuitive findings. Not only do more young migrant men than women report sexual violence and rape, almost twice as much when it comes to the latter, but also, percentage-wise, they report more stranger perpetrators, with women being more likely to report partners as perpetrators and the other categories being roughly similar. More men than women claiming to be sexually victimized isn't that far out when you look at studies that focusing on sexual victimization of both genders, but even then, it usually tends to be that it's females, not males, who are more often victimized by strangers instead of people close to them, so that's notable
.
After that, there's the fact that those coming from non-conflict zones report twice as much SV as those coming from conflict zones, which completely takes away the obvious answer for why there would be so much rape of men by strangers, that being that it's because of armed fighters raping POWs and male civilians. And apparently, not only was rape and SV overall twice as common in non-conflict settings, but those from conflict settings were also percentage-wise less likely to report stranger perpetrators, so that's just one more hit to the idea that it's caused by the fighters.
The migrants who are still waiting for the decision on whether they can stay or not do report the highest SV numbers, since at first I thought even that might be switched, implying that most of that does happen in their home countries, but the nearly-identical numbers for the other groups are still rather puzzling.
And on top of it, asylum-seekers don't report SV and rape at only slightly higher numbers than those seeking family reunification, and those migrating for other reasons report higher percentages than both of those. Though those were 2018 data, so who knows.
So yeah, overally just very unexpected numbers, and it's clear that not even the people behind this know what to make of that. They bring up that in active combat zones, men might be at even higher risk of SV than women, but that fails to explain their own findings showing that people coming from conflict zones had lower SV victimization percentage-wise than those who came from other places.
This study itself doesn't seem to have looked at who the perpetrators are, a limitation of the data they were working with I guess, though from other stuff they bring up, there's one study which claims that about 20% of this SV and rape happens in the destination country, and another one, which I'll probably take a closer look at since it apparently found an equal number of both male and female perpetrators, found that a third of rape of migrants was done by European citizens, so, in both of those, the majority of it was either done in the source country or during the migration journey.
With those numbers, if they wanted to, anti-immigration types could probably correctly claim that migrating through unsafe routes and ways makes young men more vulnerable to rape and sexual assault than living in active combat zones where armed fighters are going around looking for civilian targets from the opposing faction to humiliate, though whether they would make such an argument to deter migrants is a completely different question.

Frontiers | Sexual violence and rape among young migrants in Sweden: a cross-sectional study on prevalence, determinants, perpetrators, and reporting patterns
BackgroundYoung migrants are particularly vulnerable to SV (SV) due to their age and the challenges of migration. However, there is limited knowledge regardi...
With those subverted expectations out of the way
Unlike the prevailing trend where SV rates are higher among women aged 16–29 years, our research reveals a different trend among young migrant men (12, 14, 21, 22). Specifically, young migrant men (26% for SV, 10% for rape) report higher incidences of SV and rape compared to young migrant women (21% for SV, 6% for rape). However, young migrant men report SV at a rate 10 times higher (10%) than young men (1%) in the general population and higher rate than women (7%) in the general population, emphasizing their increased vulnerability (22).
Women (31%) reported partners as perpetrators more frequently than men (23%) and non-binary individuals (18%), while men (56%) and non-binary individuals (55%) reported strangers as perpetrators more often than women (47%).
Migrants born in non-conflict areas reported partners (42%) and strangers (79%) as perpetrators to a higher degree than those born in conflict areas (22 and 50% respectively).
The migrants who are still waiting for the decision on whether they can stay or not do report the highest SV numbers, since at first I thought even that might be switched, implying that most of that does happen in their home countries, but the nearly-identical numbers for the other groups are still rather puzzling.

In specific contexts, such as armed conflict zones, male victims—especially younger males—are at significant risk of SV victimization, sometimes surpassing rates experienced by females and girls.
According to another study conducted by MdM, 21.1% of reported rapes and 17.7% of sexual assaults occurred after individuals had arrived in the destination country (28).
Notably, European citizens were identified as assailants in a third of reported incidents (16).
