Ethnics were never meant to rule themselves, we exist to be ruled under foreign empires for much of history and every time we strayed away and tried to rule ourselves, the world has seen the worst imaginable ethnic cleansing and civil wars. Now every single ethnic or religious group wants a state or wants to prevent others from having one: you can’t have a functioning state under those conditions.

This is a normal historical process. The only difference is that nationalism in Europe, due to the fact that Europe was the most developed civilization, happened earlier. The Napoleonic Wars, the Franco-Prussian War, and other wars were largely wars of ethnic origin. The only reason why World War I became a global war was because the Germans and the French could not agree on who lived in Alsace-Lorraine. They could not determine whether it was German or French territory. The same was true for the Balkans. The Serbs wanted to create a South Slavic state led by themselves. This is a normal process. The absence of ethnic conflicts indicates historical backwardness.
