Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has announced his retirement from the company after more than ten years.

Bowser will retire from Nintendo of America as of December 31st, 2025 after succeeding Reggie Fils-Aime back in 2019.

His replacement, Devon Pritchard, has been at the company for over 19 years and has been in multiple leadership roles for over a decade.

“One of my earliest video game experiences was playing the arcade version of Donkey Kong,” Bowser said in a press release. “Since that time, all things Nintendo have continued to be a passion for both me and my family. Leading Nintendo of America has been the honor of a lifetime, and I am proud of what our team has accomplished in both business results and the experiences we’ve created for consumers.”

Bowser continued, “Now, it’s time for the next generation of leadership and Devon’s track record speaks for itself. She is an exceptional leader, and her promotion is a testament to her strong performance and strategic contributions to the company’s growth. I have full confidence that she will guide the company to even greater heights.”

Pritchard commented, “I am humbled and excited to take on this new role. Doug has been a fantastic mentor, and I look forward to building on the incredible foundation he has helped establish. With characters and worlds that offer something for everyone, my focus will be continuing to build on Nintendo’s legacy of surprising and delighting our longtime fans, while at the same time welcoming new players into the Nintendo family.”

It's insane how the build quality dropped from the Wii U/3ds to the switch. The switch 1 feels like a cheap toy.

(He means well though and has a good head on his shoulders about where the company should actually go creatively but he was never the one making those decisions. He was more just a glorified PR guy)

Nintendo has been shit or trending downward into the shit pile since Yamauchi died and was no longer there to reign Miyamoto’s bad ideas in as well prevent Nintendo from hiring Eiji Aounuma or at the very least putting him in control of anything other than getting the coffee and the donuts.

Sean Malstrom would probably tell you that Mr. Iwatas death also didn’t help matters much which would also be true but yeah Yamauchi was the Vince McMahon true genius and visionary of Nintendo and without him they’ve been making glorified shovelware with only a rare almost return to form gem here and there ever since.

Their reputation rests almost entirely on the extreme quality of the NES and the SNES eras and the early Wii + Switch era.

The latter half of those two last eras not so much and the Wii U, GameCube, N64 and the Virtual Boy were all failures that likely damaged the company’s reputation tremendously as did Aounuma Zelda and 3D Mario (2D created the phenomenon around Mario ie movies, cereals and having it featured on the late night talk shows when they were still somewhat decent and relevant. Nobody gives a fuck about 3D Mario save for message board Nintendo sycophants).
