Do zero sugar (artifically sweetened) beverages have any dangerous side effects?

I've been drinking lots of artifically sweetened beverages but they taste so similiar to the real thing, they seem to good to be true.
Am I being poisoned?

I heard artificial sweeteners are actually far worse for you then natural sugar but I'm not sure how true that is.
If you're American they don't even put real sugar in most products and put shit tons of HFCS instead if I recall so doesn't matter either way then.
