A single man's labor was much more valuable when we lived in tribal societies. Cucking a man would be extremely difficult to do with out him finding out given how small and tightly networked the society would be. Men had far more recourse as the societies understood that it wouldn't take many women to give in to their hypergamy to completely destroy the tribe as a whole. Men fighting with each other or abandoning the tribe would leave it susceptible to starvation and more vulnerable to attack from rivals. Especially if the men won't feed and protect the children.
