The fundamental problem why we have been put in this situation is because selection pressures eased in the last 50 years, causing lots of weak and incompetent people to pass on their genetics who otherwise wouldn't have mated, or even if they did, their offsprings wouldn't be able to survive the harshness of nature.

In the past, only those from upper echelons of society got to reproduce because they had the resources to do so with multiple women while lower classes couldn't afford it, or even if those of lower classes reproduced, their offsprings would stand to die off due to lack of finances required to deal with natural selection pressures like diseases, disasters, etc.
