Do you still have to write an essay to be able to register?

I remember that my first attempt to register was denied because my application was too short.
I was denied an earlier join date because of that.
On my second attempt I literally wrote an essay and I was finally worthy of joining.
Do you still have to do this? I'm interested, because the quality of newcels indicates that it's much easier to register now than it was 3 years ago ...

My application was somewhat short and they accepted me. I think its up to the mods.

Yup same happened to me. I was rejected thrice before I was allowed to join. The worst part is you cannot even use the same email to make an account, so you have to use a new throw away email every time.
