I remember it well. I recall that at first they gave the death toll as 50,000. A blatant lie but a clever propaganda move. They knew that they could use this event to pursue their agenda and that people would always remember that statistic.
There was something of a vacuum in geopolitics around the turn of the millennium. Cold War over, no sign of a new enemy to have an excuse to build up the military industrial complex.
I find myself wondering why whoever did it waited until there was a Republican government. That in turn makes me wonder why the Republicans were so keen to steal the 2000 election. Were they working to a timeline?
It could have been an inside job in that the plot was known about and allowed to proceed. The security services knew these people were in the country and having flying lessons.
There are certainly people evil enough to allow it to proceed for their own gain.
