It's not realistic that a group of preppy 17 year old prettyboys (no homo) are going to be interested in reciting poetry and having philosophical discussions about life just because their literature teacher is quirky and has very original teaching methods. Even if the movie is set in the 50s and they had other values I find it very hard to believe that they would enjoy such activity instead of going to parties to chase foids, play sports or ride their bikes. IRL what would have happened is that yes they would like their teacher and have good memories from his classes but that's where it would end. I had good teachers in the past who took their subject very seriously but not one of them motivated me to pursue more knowledge about it or having a secret society with my friends. At that age I was more interested in trying my luck with foids (I was still bluepilled), vidya, anime and getting good grades for university rather than in academic matters.
