OK, as tragic as this ultimately is, if that's what actually happened here then this is ultimately a pretty darkly funny story. Some people in the comments are speculating that the mother and son didn't think he wanted to kill them and that they were acting in self-defense, and actually just wanted to kill him though, which I'm not too sure about but it's definitely a possibility.
