Yeah so basically she wants to uh end anonymity on the web (not that tor existed already) it would most likely be another nothing burger in all honesty and won't ever go into practice unless they want to make Labour even more unpopular, plus people can just use anonymous payments on VPNs like Crypto and Cash or use even fucking web proxies.

Doing this would be tantamount to banning VPNs anyway because it defeats the whole purpose of trying to be private online and the more privacy respecting ones would just pull out of the market than deal with AV bullshit.

It's honestly funny how these retarded government ministers can introduce this shit about "PROTECTING THE CHILDREN!!!!!" when in reality they fuck everyone over and use it as an excuse for mass surveillance of it's citizens.

The only thing they'll do is just tell platforms to not encourage it's users to use VPNs to bypass the AV shit but anyone who was watched enough youtube knows how they work, because everyone is sponsored by them

I've talked to some people online who live in the UK and apparently you need to verify your government ID to do just about anything on the internet now. I've seen posts saying you need to verify your ID just to use the fucking nvidia app over there which is insane.

Apparently other western countries are considering copying this draconian law. Unfortunately the "WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN!??!?!?" card is insanely overpowered. Not only does it trick a lot of naive normies into supporting policies that violate civil liberties, but it's also framed in a way that intimidates opposition from speaking up. After all, it's about "PROTECTING CHILDREN", and nobody wants to publicly oppose a law that "PROTECTS CHILDREN".

I do agree with one thing though. Children should NOT have unsupervised internet access. But this is something that PARENTS need to enforce, rather than be enforced by forcing everyone to verify their government ID to do anything on the internet. Another issue with verifying your government ID is even if it's not publicly visible, it's only a matter of time before there are data breaches.

Seeing shit like this makes me really glad I was born in America. Say what you want about my country, but we generally resist these policies more than any other western nations. That said I remember when Nikki Haley (a living embodiment of everything wrong with American politics) was aggressively pushing for this. She even took it a step further and said she wanted to make it so that all accounts on social media have their real names visible to the public, effectively criminalizing anonymity.

I'm under no illusions that I'll have the freedoms I currently do forever. On a long enough timeline America will implement the same policy. Civil libertarians are able to win some battles here and there and hold the line for a while, but the global trajectory is clearly trending towards more surveillance, and away from free speech and civil liberties.
